In mythology, an Ethiopian princess whose mother Kassiopeia, boasted that she was more beautiful than the Nereids. For this Poseidon sent a sea-monster (ketos) to ravage the land, only to be appeased by the offering of Andromeda. Perseus, passing by with the petrifying head of Gorgo-Medusa, falls in love with her and kills the monster.
