Cast Gallery catalogue number: B070

Cast No. B070

Charioteer wearing a chiton with shoulder bands to stop the dress billowing.
The right hand held the reins, parts of which survive. Parts of the chariot, horses legs and tail have also been found.
He was dedicated for a victory either in 478 or 474 BC. The inscription on the base reads:
Polyzalos, victorious with his horses (chariot) dedicated me/son of Deinomenes, whom make prosper, honoured Apollo.
The first line once read Polyzalos, lord of Gela dedicated (this) memorial.... ; which was erased, presumably because of his claim to Gela and embarrassment over his tyranny.
