Sanctuary site in southern Greece for the god Zeus. His temple there housed Pheidias' statue, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The quadrennial games (athletic contests) at Olympia attracted competitors from all over the Greek world. It is a major source for Greek statuary, not all of which was plundered in the Roman period. The site was flooded in late antiquity, which preserved many of its monuments.
