Tivoli

Photo. D.C.KurtzAncient Tiber, east of Rome. It was the site of a great villa complex built by the Emperor Hadrian, begun in AD 118. This includes many buildings in various classical and Egyptian styles, copying those the emperor had seen in his many travels, and was decorated with copies of Greek sculpture, of which it has proved a very rich source. The buildings include a Kanopos-Serapeion (shrine) on the Egyptian model, decorated with Caryatids copying those on the Erechtheion in Athens, and a temple of Venus based on that for the Aphrodite of Knidos.
