Pliny the Elder (AD 23-79). A Roman man of letters best known for his Natural History in 37 books. This is an important source of information about ancient art since he describes and attributes many works, but his interest spanned all areas of knowledge and science. He died observing the famous eruption of Vesuvius that destroyed Pompeii.
