Athenian general and statesman of the mid 5th century BC who led Athens and her allies to victory over the Persians after their invasions of Greece in 480/479 BC. It was at his suggestion that the Athenians rebuilt the temples destroyed by the Persians in Athens and Attica, including the Parthenon. He died in 429 BC.
