Naukratis

Map of Mediterranean and Black SeasGreek trading city in the Nile Delta, upstream from Alexandria. It was founded by East Greeks (with Aegina, another trading state) in the later 7th century. It is an important source of archaic east Greek pottery, some of which may have been made there. It had Greek temples and was administered, under Egyptian sanction, by a guild of merchants from various Greek states, but with time becomes more like a Greek colony with its own citizens.
