Women who serve the god Dionysos. They are immortal but not accorded worship and are seldom given names. They are characterized by their wild, ecstatic dancing in the course of which they were thought to tear apart living animals. They often wear animal skins and consort with Satyrs, carrying a thyrsos wand.
