Kore (plural korai)

Kore from the Athenian Acropolis (height 2.15m) made by the Athenian sculptor Antenor, about 525 BC. Athens, Acropolis Museum 681.An attic marble kore from the Athenian Acropolis, about 520-510 BC. Athens, Acropolis Museum 672.The figure of a maiden. The term is regularly applied to the 6th century BC marble statues of young women which were dedicated at sanctuaries. The statues represented attendants of the deity of the sanctuary, rather than the goddess. They could also serve as grave markers. The proper name Kore applies to Persephone, occasionally, in its meaning 'daughter', to Athena, as daughter of Zeus.
