A district of Athens around the main west gate (Dipylon Gate), extending within the walls to the classical Agora, and outside the walls. Named for being a main potters' quarter, but also the site of what was probably Athens' main cemetery, with tombs lining the streets away from the city, and including an area of State Graves for those who had fallen in war.
