Epikouros

Marble bust. Rome, Museo CapitolinoA Greek philosopher (341-270 BC) who taught at Athens in `the Garden'. Founder of the `Epicurean' school which taught that pleasure was a proper goal in life, but that pleasure for the soul was more important than that for the body. He is represented in portraits which were popular, as was his philosophy, in the Roman period.
