Ephesus

Map of Greece and the AegeanA city of Ionia, location of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and one of the largest of all Greek temples. In the archaic period it was favoured by the Lydian kings, and Croesus paid for some of the temple columns. The temple was burned in the fourth century BC, but rebuilt, and the city re-planned in the Hellenistic period. It remained prosperous to the end of antiquity.
