Corcyra

Map of Greece and the AegeanModern Corfu. Island off the west coast of northern Greece, on a busy route to the north up the Adriatic and to the west. It was colonized by Corinth but was often at loggerheads with its mother city and allied with Athens for part of the Peloponnesian War. Its geographical importance meant that it was always a bone of contention between major powers, including, eventually, Rome. There is an important temple of Artemis of the early 6th century with pedimental sculpture, and a smaller archaic temple of Dionysos known from part of one pediment.
