A sanctuary site at the southern tip of Attica. The temple of Poseidon was an important classical building of the Periclean period, with architectural sculpture including friezes. Earlier, colossal kouros dedications made there are among the first in the Greek world. There was a separate sanctuary of Athena. Sunium was also important for its ship-sheds and fort, and for nearby marble quarries and silver mines.
