Hesperides

Detail from an Athenian red-figure clay vase, about 400 BC. London, British Museum E224.The daughters of Hesperus whose task was to tend the golden apples growing in their garden, located in the distant west, and also guarded by the serpent Ladon. Herakles had to acquire the apples as his Eleventh Labour. He did this either with the help of Atlas who got the apples while Herakles held up the heavens for him; or by killing the serpent that guarded the apples; or by persuading the Hesperides to give them to him.
