Detail from Athenian red-figure clay vase about 475-425 BC. London. British Museum 98.7-16.5In mythology, the wife of Herakles, who won her by defeating Acheloos. She is carried over a stream by the Centaur Nessos who then tries to rape her, but is killed by Herakles. She keeps some of the Centaur's blood as a love charm, but it is a poison, and the cloak dipped in it which she sends Herakles drives him to suicide.
